Thank you for this. Lazy group-think on the part of UU's is no less objectionable than lazy group-think from those with whom we disagree. Many a political moderate or conservative has quietly left our ranks because of such smug and thoughtless assumptions. We are not all Greens, nor even Democrats, but we have managed to create our own, rather narrow, orthodoxy that assumes we are.

Though I can't stand to hear his voice and oppose everything he stands for, I'm nevertheless unwilling to join those who would sign petitions and boycott so as to remove him from the airwaves. I despise the quality of his thought. but feel obliged to defend his right to express it. No, I don't have to listen to what he says because he has no respect for truth, but I can't in good conscience condone shutting him up.

We don't remind ourselves about this often enough to celebrate the unity in diversity, right along with the diversity!

I've always said that we are the "both-and" religious path. I guess that I'll have to add "yes-and" to my description now. =)

Are these signs of unwelcome or signs of something else? The first example sounds more like a lack of worship associate training and sloppiness rather than being unwelcoming. It is more a sign of being unprofessional, and yes, lay leaders can offer a professional worship service when given the tools and knowledge. If lay leaders are taught that their role represents how others will perceive the congregation, then they will handle this role with the reverence it deserves.

The second example sounds like an unintentional oversight. This is an example why it is good to have someone else proof our work to make sure that everything needed is there. It too can be a sign of sloppiness.

The downfalls to these may result in not feeling welcomed. But acts of Welcoming can be still be present even in the midst of sloppy worship and in sloppy websites.

Jenny's experience rings true to what I experienced as a YA in Denver in the early 1980s and is why I spent many years creating and shaping young adult ministry before I became a UU minister. It is harder than it looks to create these ministries as a solo pastor in a 475 member church, but we continue to try!

Anastacia

You are correct, we need to plan for these types of extremes as well. That is going to be the topic of the "When the Unthinkable Happens" session of the safety series, along with other types of extreme events - fire, hurricanes, tornados, floods, etc.

This summer I attended a workshop specifically about this topic for the UUA and my experiences from that workshop will be the basis of this workshop. I hope everyone attends!

Dear Beth:
I think your idea is an awesome one. My father, a retired machinery and maintenance electrician, always emphasized safety with my siblings and me. However, I see one large omission that we must consider now that the election has gone to the bigoted GOP: we must have safety plans in place in case of a dangerous intruder or intruders. We ignore this issue at our peril. It is possible to be open and welcoming as well as safe from dangerous persons who want to prove a political or religious point at the point of a gun or with a bag of explosives. I am not paranoid - I am realistic. We have the *right* to protect ourselves, don't we? I know that I am not being a "good" UU here, but I'd rather be a "bad" UU than to see another Tennessee Valley happen. Please consider what I have written here. Thank you.
